Enlightenment Through Fiber

My patterns are meant to inspire spinners to knit with their handspun, and take the creation of their yarn one step further.

Picture
A Little Ziggy Stardust
In homage to David Bowie, knit up this lightweight shawlette, and wear it to all the concerts and shows you’ll see this summer. It features garter stitch, and a diamond shaped lace border. Knitted side to side, including the lace edge, there are no stitches to pick up, just weave in your ends and block! It’s the perfect size to throw over your shoulders while watching your favorite band, under the stars.

Icing Cowl
This delicate cowl reminds me of a French pastry decorated with swirls of colorful icing. It uses lace weight for the main color, with a multi-colored sport weight for the textured bands. Knitted in the round, with simple shaping and an easy to memorize stitch pattern, it’s a lovely, lightweight addition to your spring accessories.

Pirate Queen

A twist on the “seaman’s scarf,” an homage to the unsung seafaring women in our history. The typical seaman scarf is wide on both ends, with a narrow ribbed center. Use a textured or multi-color yarn for the border, and a smooth bulky yarn for the center, to create a seafaring scarf with pizazz!

Rolled Brim Borderline
An instant gratification hat with a textured border. Knit circularly with two coordinating bulky yarns, choose one textured and one smooth for contrast. The border can be turned up for a double thick brim, or worn down, for a slouchier effect.

Reminiscent of the lacing on vintage snowshoes, this bulky cowl doubles as a shoulder cozy. The intricate lattice work looks like cabling, but is created with simple twisted stitches, no cable needle necessary. Because of all the built-in buttonholes, you can play with multiple combinations of buttoning this funky rectangle!

Gwenivere's Anklets

Organic Wave

A directional stitch pattern, and gently waving edges are created by simple short rows in this garter stitch cowl. Using a variegated or self-striping yarn adds to the visual interest. Great for handspun yarn! Cowl begins with a provisional crochet cast on, is knitted flat, and then grafted together at the end.

Snowdrift
BUY NOW
This double layer hat is actually two hats in one! Using a twist on the classic Norwegian Star motif, the color pattern is cleverly reversed on each side of the hat. Two layers, Fair Isle color work, and an alpaca/merino blend yarn ensure warmth that will resist any snowdrift you may encounter.

This lacy little cowl is a great way to show off small amounts of handspun or novelty yarn. The simple two-stitch lace pattern works equally well with multi-colored and textured yarns, and you can work as many rows as you have yarn. The yarns used in the models are handspun sport, worsted, and bulky, but other weights and commercial yarns may be substituted, and instructions are provided to modify the gauge and size of this multi-season gem.

Permafrost
BUY NOW
When the polar vortex arrived, single digit temperatures during a.m. walks necessitated reinforcements in my headgear. Two ingredients were key, wool and layers. The Permafrost Hat uses Fair Isle color work to add layers in the brim, and interest to the reversible design. Machine wash wool makes this the perfect accessory for walking, running, or shoveling the driveway!

A chunky cowl, that doubles as a shoulder cozy, knitted in the round with bulky weight yarn and fluffy mohair trim. The simple lace pattern is airy and light, similar to its snowy namesake. Hand spun Cloud yarn using mohair locks was the inspiration for this cowl, but a bulky commercial boucle yarn is easily substituted. Pattern includes instructions for spinning Cloud yarn.

A simple knit and purl stitch combination adds a dash of texture to this easy hat offered in two versions. Choose which style, after casting on and knitting the brim. Increase, more or less, stitches at the crown for the version you prefer, or make both! Just 2 oz. of fiber, spun to 10 wpi, or 150 yards of worsted weight yarn is enough for either style.

Easy to knit semi-circular twin cowls, one in smooth stockinette the other in a textured garter ridge stitch. Like the changeable nature of this sun sign, each can be buttoned and worn at least three ways! Button in front for a traditional shawlette look, button on the side for a draped scarf, or like a bandana, crossing the ends in back and then buttoning them under the wrap in front for a closer fitting cowl. No shawl pin necessary!

Emzara Shawlette

Contrasting stripes, and delicate lace panels make for interesting knitting in this semi-circular shawlette. Using three colors of fingering weight yarn, you can choose to make your stripes distinct, or understated. Or, use one fabulous color for an interesting play of texture, without the diversion of multiple hues.
Avalon Springs Farm Cavalry yarn in colors Teal Lance, Light Blue Flag and Blue Green Tornier were used for the model shown. This yarn comes in 250 yd. skeins, and the shawl pictured used approx. 195 yds. of each color.

Coco Chanel’s timeless style inspired this Houndstooth check cowl and mitts. Silver buttons accent the striped garter stitch edges, and add to the polished air of these classic accessories.
The Cowl pattern requires 125 yds. of the main color, and 110 yds. of a contrasting color. Mitts require 65 yds. main color, and 55 yds. contrasting color for the pair.
